Biotechnology
Brazil is endowed with the largest biodiversity on the planet. Its macrofauna comprises 1622 bird species, 525 mammal species, 517 amphibian species, being 788 of these endemic (only occurring within the country) and 468 reptile species. It is the country with the largest number of plants and mammals and the second richest in amphibians.
Brazil leads the development of biodiesel and ethanol technologies. The country is the largest ethanol producer in the world, having produced 17.8 billions of litres in 2006 (38% of the world production).

A research made in 2006 by the North American company “Global Bioeconomy Consulting, LLC”, counted Brazil as the 11th country in the world in number of biotechnology companies - 350 (including all of the sub-branches) and as the withholder of the 5th largest number of employees (approximately 27,000 direct jobs).
