Located in the city of Campinas in an area of approximately 3,873,600 square feet, CPqD is a leading research and development center in Latin America. Its offices and laboratories occupy an area of over 861,092 square feet and it is positioned as one of the most important solution providers worldwide.
CPqD was founded in 1976, as part of the Sistema Telebrás that until 1998 held the monopoly of telecommunications services in Brazil. After that year, as a result of the privatization process of Telebrás, CPqD was reorganized and became an independent Private Foundation that currently employs over 1,200 highly qualified staff.
CPqD’s solutions cover the sector of Business and Operations Support Systems, the provisioning of highly specialized consulting services and laboratory services. CPqD’s extremely advanced technological solutions are widely used in Brazil and spread in the markets of Africa and Latin America.
CPqD leading role as a research and development center is the result of over thirty years of endeavors generating the best solutions for the industry of telecom and IT at the highest level of flexibility and innovation.
CPqD holds a wide range of telecom and IT solutions such as the information systems for Operation Support on Inside and Outside Plant Management, Workforce Management, Asset Management, as well as Business Support on Billing and Customer Care; Information Systems for Network Management, Speech Processing, Broadband Access Management, Digital TV, Business Intelligence, Wireline and Mobile Telecommunication Networks, among several other systems. CPqD’s market share is integrated by customers from Government Agencies, the Electric Power sector, Financial Institutions and large Corporations. CPqD has provided outstanding contributions in the fields of Social Intelligence and E-Government, which direct positive effects in the welfare of citizens, minorities, small-scale companies, and the public administration.
CPqD boasts an extended and inclusive research and development program, with strong commitments to product innovations in line with realistic and strategic implementations, where potential interests from the market and/or the society arise. To this end, CPqD’s projects encompass the provision of technological know-how aimed at the development and evolution of products, processes, systems or services related to communications and information technology.
Presently, the migration of applications towards the IP universe is a reality supported by the need to reduce costs, increase access and operational speed, and provide greater mobility. CPqD has carried out great developments in the Network Management area. It provided automation to network management processes by concentrating on the most important macro functions of Performance and Failure Management.
With regard to Next Generation Networks (NGN), several aspects have been examined: traffic differentiation through techniques providing quality of service; routing aspects, in order to transport new applications; planning and performance evaluation; and features analysis of the main protocol of packet networks, providing support to new applications.
CPqD has worked in the qualification of network performance evaluation for
the 2G, 2.5G, and 3G mobile services, focusing on planning, project, network maintenance and operation. This was performed through the deployment of laboratories, development of mobile network simulation tools and teams, evolution of network parameters measurements both in the field and at the laboratories, and the feasibility study regarding the deployment of new access networks with emerging technologies.
The integration between IP and WDM technologies, in view of the recent attributions of completely optically-routed networks, also constitutes a distinguished CPqD expertise in the area of optical communications. The increase of transmission capabilities of the WDM systems have caused an
impact on the infrastructure of optic cabling in terms of transmission and wider capillarity in the access network. The procedures and methodologies of network projects, such as failure evaluations in optical networks, have also been refined as a result.
